Honey has been used for over 10,000 years, not only in the kitchen but also for medicinal, healing and skin care as well. Due to its capability, honey has been studied to determine that its ingredients and properties are the reasons behind its variety of use. As far back as the first century B.C., honey has been used in skin care. It is this link to beauty regimens that has lead to modern day use of honey in skin care products. Honey not only keeps the skin young and beautiful but it smoothes the skin of blemishes and keeps it soft and supple.
Cleopatra was the first iconic woman in history to show us the natural skin care remedy of honey. She bathed daily in milk in honey, which combined the natural exfoliating process of milk with the moisturizing effects of honey. What she didn’t realize was that not only did the honey keep her skin soft and hydrated but the honey also kept her skin looking younger through the natural antioxidants that honey possesses. In addition, honey has natural ingredients including vitamins and minerals that the skin needs for cell growth, and cell removal. Most honeys include vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium, chlorine, sulfur, iron, phosphate, copper, iodine, zinc, and vitamin B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3.
Honey not only moisturizes the skin, it removes wrinkles and acts as an anti-aging treatment. Honey nourishes the skin by providing it with valuable nutrients that can be stripped away by the environment. It promotes elasticity, smoothness and softness by maintaining moisture and keeps the skin hydrated. Honey has the ability to heal and remove blemishes, acne and scars and protects the skin from damaging UV rays.
Although many skin care products may use honey as one of its several ingredients the best way to use honey for skin care is through daily consumption of honey and natural honey home remedies. Because of the available access to honey, the ability to make home skin care remedies is easy and inexpensive. Honey can be used for all facial and skin care conditions and problems. Some examples of honey home skin care products include honey cleansers, honey toners, facial masks, moisturizers, in the bath, conditioners, acne relievers, lip balms, and body scrubs. In addition honey can be combined with milk, lemon juice and cinnamon for several other home remedies. For the easiest application of honey, apply directly to the skin and remove with warm water after 15-30 minutes.
