I’m not familiar with the Ora brand Manuka Honey. However, Manuka Honey is not only safe but very effective when used on the skin or hair. When using Manuka Honey or Manuka Honey products for medicinal or cosmetic purposes, make sure it has a UMF rating between 10 and 16. Anything less is not potent enough and anything more is too potent. Manuka Honey UMF 16 is more desirable.

What really makes manuka honey great is how it’s not as sweet as regular honey, my wife just can’t get enough of it, it’s delicious.

I haven’t read any documented evidence that Manuka Honey can help with weight loss. Although it does have less calories than table sugar.

The numbers that you see on the label represent the antibacterial potency. Manuka Honey with a UMF rating between 10 and 16 are most desirable. Less than UMF 10 is not active and should only be used as a sweetener. Manuka Honey that is overly potent (i.e. 20, 25, 30) is very rare, too expensive and completely overkill.

@frankb2211 That was quick! Thank you for informing me. I will get some of this stuff :-)

The healing properties of honey can be compromised if exposed to extreme heat in excess of 160 Fahrenheit. Ordinary honey that can normally be found on the shelves of supermarkets is sometimes heated during the processing stage in order for it to look more visually appealing. Ordinary honey should only be used as a food item. However, Manuka Honey can be used as a medicinal item if it is raw and unprocessed with a UMF rating between 10-16.

Is honey normally heat treated? Anybody know?

    @11spike7

omg this is amazing.. i have a patch of incurable ringworm (fungal) on my skin, despite of many types of cream i have used it just won’t go away. i’m so frustrated by this problem. so would you suggest me to apply some pure Manuka honey on it? you mentioned your friend’s skin was clear within 48 hours that is simply unbelievable. as far as i know manuka has great healing power but its smell a little bit too strong for me…

Have you head of Y.S. Organic bee farms brand manuka honey? Do you know if it is a legit product? Seems hard to determine which ones are genuine when so many don’t have certification.

  16. 11spike7 says:

A friend of mine had a fungal skin condition near his armpit for 6-7 months…it would NOT go away, despite numerous remedy attempts.
He read about Manuka honey, bought some and
dabbed it on the site. His skin was clear within 48 hours.

  17. therobanata says:

Man really. You would think a higher concentration would be more effective.

  18. frankb2211 says:

The color of Manuka Honey can vary from batch-to-batch. Only Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 10 or higher is considered to be active and suitable for therapeutic use. Make sure it says “UMF” on the label, not just active. Manuka Honey is antiviral as well as antibacterial. I haven’t read any documented evidence that Manuka Honey is effective in treating bronchitis but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

  19. frankb2211 says:

Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 25 is overly potent. In our own laboratory studies, we’ve destroyed the MRSA bacterium with as little as UMF 10 and that’s the most resilient bacteria on the face of the planet. There have also been reports of people experiencing sensitivity to Manuka Honey that is too potent, in the form of a burning or stinging sensation. We recommend UMF 16 as the most ideal potency for most applications.

  20. therobanata says:

What do you think about MGO 550 (UMF 25) ?

  21. chickenlikken says:

can it be applied on the skin for arthritis?

  22. frankb2211 says:

Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 10 or higher is considered to be active and suitable for therapeutic use. UMF 0-9 may not yield the same results that people have come to expect from Manuka Honey. UMF 5+ is not active. In fact, if it doesn’t have the UMF trademark on the label, it might have even been tested.

Regarding your other questions, Manuka Honey is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic.

  23. shgskhgskhgslhg says:

Thanks Frankb2211. I got few more questions. 1. I saw two brands of manuka honey in nearby whole foods. A dark looking manuka honey with “bio active 5+” and a yellowish manuka honey labelled “active 15+” . Is Manuka honey supposed to be dark only? (i bought the later thinking its high UMF) 2. Is manuka honey anti-viral as well as some websites suggest or only anti bacterial? 3. Does it cure bronchitis (viral) and how long does it have to be taken before one can see the effect ?

  24. frankb2211 says:

For reasons that have not yet been discovered, Manuka Honey seems to only destroy the harmful, infectious bacteria and it leaves the good bacteria. This is a major advantage to using Manuka Honey instead of antibiotics.

  25. shgskhgskhgslhg says:

Hi Frankb2211 – do you know whether Manuka honey destroys the “good” bacteria found in human intestine (that are very essential for a good immune system)? Thanks
